ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has raged around the world over the recent years, raising the global community's awareness of the interconnection of human civilizations and urging the reconsideration of the human-nature relationship. The escalating worldwide ecological crises are putting human survival and development at risk. The phenomenon has aroused the awareness of "ecological rationality,” consciousness of "economic value” and appeal for "ecological justice” in the universal sense. The endeavor of promoting ecological civilization has been included as part of the five-sphere integrated plan for building socialism with Chinese characteristics since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). General Secretary Xi Jinping's thought on ecological civilization has fully manifested the value and goal of comprehensively promoting ecological civilization and adhering to the Chinese path to modernization. The Chinese path to modernization, which has reflected on and outclassed the Western-style logic for modernization, shows a unique horizon and independent wisdom. Focusing on addressing the uncertainties facing human survival in the New Era and aiming at embracing the future, the Chinese path to modernization has shifted the mindset from economic rationality to ecological rationality, abandoned anthropocentrism, and firmly upheld and fulfilled the code of conduct for rational "economic man.” The endeavor of building an eco-friendly society and an ecological community has showcased the favorable institutional practice in Chinese modernization and China's wisdom, demonstrated rational planning, prudential design and effective implementation for the prospect of mankind and highlighted a progressive trend in human civilization. © 2022 Brill Academic Publishers. ABSTRACT

In Cebu, Philippines during the pandemic, hospitals were full and would no longer accept patients, which led the researchers to make a study on shipping containers converted to hospitals, isolation, quarantine, and other livable facilities to address the problem. If another wave of the virus comes, the facility is already in place to accommodate patients. Numerous studies have been conducted about shipping containers on their functionality, performance, and quality but there is no study about its marketability to target markets. The study determined the marketability of shipping containers converted into livable facilities for commercialization based on the following objectives: i) the four Ps of marketing, ii) industry and competitor analysis, iii) challenges and opportunities, and, iv) to propose recommendations on developing the converted shipping containers into livable facilities. There were two hundred thirty-nine respondents. The study used the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. The study found a high demand for shipping containers to be converted into livable facilities which could be a profitable business once commercialized. © 2023 The Authors. Published by IASE.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in changes in consumer behavior and has created new opportunities and challenges for the provisioning of green products in emerging economies. The objective of this study was to identify how perceptions on COVID-19 affected the variables of planned behavior and responsible purchase intention during the pandemic in Colombia. A total of 320 consumers participated in an online survey, and the responses were analyzed using a structural equation model (SEM) and AMOS 24 statistical software. The results were positive regarding the development of better environmental awareness, indicating that COVID-19 (COV) influenced the attitude (ATT) of individuals and contributed to subjective norms (SNs) and perceived behavioral control (PBC), and that SNs and ATT influence eco-friendly purchase intention (EFPI). However, PBC does not contribute to EFPI. Colombian consumers have become aware of the importance to society of buying eco-friendly products, and planned behavior is an opportunity for organizations to formulate new portfolios relevant to the needs of the market. This is an important opportunity to sensitize consumers to the purchase of environmentally friendly products and for the identification of commercial strategies by companies that bet on the formulation and commercialization of eco-friendly portfolios that generate value for society.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted various sectors, especially the global economy, resulting in limited MSME operations and fewer consumers who shopped directly compared to regular days. The new eco-friendly marketing system utilizing technology is a new obstacle for MSMEs in marketing their products because it relates to understanding, readiness, and ability to apply the technology. This study explores implementing an integrated ecofriendly marketing strategy model by MSME actors in Central Java in the context of economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. This type of research is exploratory qualitative research with the subject of MSMEs in eco-friendly products in Central Java. The data collection technique used non-probability sampling (snowball sampling). The analysis starts with data reduction, data presentation, and summarization. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the "ECO CUTY" solution model can be done in three ways, including (1) entrepreneurial skills;(2) institutional strengthening as an economic force to produce quality products;(3) sociopreneur skills. The implication of this research is to provide a multiplier effect by improving MSME business performance at the international level through the government's role in facilitating online single submission program management in order to monitor developments comprehensively so that governments can later adopt the successful implementation of the "ECO CUTY" model in other countries.

ABSTRACT

Podophyllotoxin (PPT) is a precursor for the synthesis of drugs against cancer and other diseases. The present sources of PPT (Sinopodophyllum hexandrum and Podophyllum peltatum) are endangered species, with PPT production highly dependent on their growing conditions. In connection with the identification of new sources of PPT, the present study aimed to recover PPT from Juniperus virginiana leaves via atmospheric or high pressure extraction methods with a focus on using eco-friendly solvents. PPT quantification was determined by UHPLC/HRMS/MS. A thorough study of conventional extraction was carried out to reveal the optimal conditions (solvent ethyl acetate at room temperature and a duration of 1 h) for maximizing the PPT recovery (about 30 mg/g of dry extract and 3 mg/g of dry initial plant material). Peleg's equation was applied for process kinetics modeling. The best PPT content in the final dry extract (42-45 mg/g of dry extract) was obtained by high pressure methods under supercritical (scCO2 with ethanol or ethyl acetate, 30 MPa, 50 °C and 100 min) or accelerated solvent extraction conditions (solvent ethyl acetate, 10.35 MPa, 20 °C and 3 cycles for 15 min). Seasonal stability and storage stability of the raw material were also determined. The present results have potential applications in the pharmacy for the delivery of PPT from juniper leaves.

ABSTRACT

The current global health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) has increased the use of personal protective equipment, especially face masks, leading to the disposal of a large amount of plastic waste causing an environmental crisis due to the use of non-biodegradable and non-recyclable polymers, such as polypropylene and polyester. In this work, an eco-friendly biopolymer, polylactic acid (PLA), was used to manufacture hierarchical nanoporous microfiber biofilters via a single-step rotary jet spinning (RJS) technique. The process parameters that aid the formation of nanoporosity within the microfibers were discussed. The microstructure of the fibers was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a noninvasive X-ray microtomography (XRM) technique was employed to study the three-dimensional (3D) morphology and the porous architecture. Particulate matter (PM) and aerosol filtration efficiency were tested by OSHA standards with a broad range (10-1000 nm) of aerosolized saline droplets. The viral penetration efficiency was tested using the ΦX174 bacteriophage (∼25 nm) with an envelope, mimicking the spike protein structure of SARS-CoV-2. Although these fibers have a similar size used in N95 filters, the developed biofilters present superior filtration efficiency (∼99%) while retaining better breathability (<4% pressure drop) than N95 respirator filters. © 2023 American Chemical Society

ABSTRACT

Under the crisis of food and energy shortage caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is emergently important to emphasize food waste prevention in the tourism and hospitality industry because people around the world have started traveling in the post-pandemic era. Based on norm activation model and individualism-collectivism, this study proposes a perspective of religious beliefs to conceptualize divine awareness (i.e. divine retribution and divine rewards) and environmental awareness (i.e. resource scarcity and eco-friendly) on the formation of food waste prevention practices. A total of 571 samples from Taiwan and 483 samples from the United States was collected. Both countries showed that religious beliefs improved divine retribution, divine rewards, and religious food waste prevention practices. Divine rewards enhanced tourists' awareness of resource scarcity and eco-friendly, and resource scarcity led to religious food waste prevention practices. Interestingly, the effects of divine retribution on resource scarcity and eco-friendly were significant only in Taiwan. © 2023 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

ABSTRACT

With the rapid growth of internet technology, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, a major portion of consumers have intended to do online shopping. Also the use of eco-friendly products is essential in today's environment and human health. Thus this paper investigates the consumers' purchasing behaviour towards substitutable non-green and eco-friendly products in a dual-channel (offline and online channels) supply chain system. The manufacturer offers a novel combination of promotions such as a return policy in the online channel and a warranty policy in the offline channel depending on the position and situation of consumers. Here, the environmental burden is reduced by considering remanufacturing/refurbishing used products during the warranty period. Therefore, consumers' demand depends on price, eco-friendliness level, warranty and return agreements. The entire problem is modelled under centralised and decentralised decision-making scenarios. Finally, the profit maximisation problem is formulated and solved in the game theory framework. A series of sensitivity analyses of various parameters is conducted numerically to validate the problem. It is observed that, due to the instant return facility in the online channel, online demand is higher than the offline with a higher warranty period. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

ABSTRACT

In this work, PLLA and CD/PLLA nanofibers were fabricated using electrospinning and utilized as a particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) filter. The electrospun PLLA and CD/PLLA were characterized with various techniques, including SEM, BET, FTIR, XRD, XPS, WCA, DSC, tensile strength testing, PM and VOCs removal efficiency, and triboelectric performance. The results demonstrated that the best air filter was 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA, which performed the highest filtration efficiencies of 96.84 ± 1.51% and 99.38 ± 0.43% for capturing PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. Its PM2.5 removal efficiency was 16% higher than that of pure PLLA, which were contributed by their higher surface area and porosity. These 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA nanofibers also exhibited the highest and the fastest VOC entrapment. For triboelectric outputs, the 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA-based triboelectric nanogenerator provided the highest electrical outputs as 245 V and 84.70 µA. These give rise to a three-fold enhancement of electrical outputs. These results indicated that the 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA can improve surface charge density that could capture more PM via electrostatic interaction under surrounding vibration. Therefore, this study suggested that 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA is a good candidate for a multifunction nanofibrous air filter that offers efficient PM and VOC removal.

ABSTRACT

Wearing a face mask is strongly advised to prevent the spread of the virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic, though masks have produced a tremendous amount of waste. As masks contain polypropylene and other plastics products, total degradation is not achievable, and masks may remain in the form of microplastics for several years in the environment. Therefore, this urgent issue ought to be addressed by properly handling waste face masks to limit their environmental impact. In relation to this goal, a novel application of recycled mask fiber (MF) derived from COVID-19 single-use surgical face masks (i.e., shredded mask fiber-SMF and cut mask fiber-CMF) has been undertaken. Eighteen mortar mixes (9 for water and 9 for 10% CO2 concentration curing) were fabricated at 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, and 2.0% of both SMF and CMF by volume of ordinary Portland cement-based mortar. The compressive strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, shrinkage, carbonation degree, permeable voids, and water absorption capabilities were assessed. The outcomes reveal that the compressive strength decreased with an increased percentage of MFs due to increased voids of the mixes with MFs as compared to a control mix. In contrast, significantly higher flexural strength was noted for the mortar with MFs, which is augmented with an increased percentage of MFs. Furthermore, the inclusion of MFs decreased the shrinkage of the mortar compared to the control mix. It was also found that MFs dramatically diminished the water absorption rate compared to the control mix, which reveals that MFs can enhance the durability of the mortar. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

ABSTRACT

The worldwide use of pharmaceuticals is of concern to those researchers who develop new techniques for the removal of these compounds from the aquatic medium. The objective of the present work was to characterize and evaluate the performance of a commercial, bentonite-based organophilic clay in removing ivermectin from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized by nitrogen physisorption, thermogravimetric-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Batch-scale adsorption experiments were performed to evaluate the kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and effect of pH on removal of this drug and reuse of the clay. The bentonite has a small specific surface area with an irregular surface. The Elovich kinetic model fits the experimental data better than other models, indicating that chemisorption contributes to drug removal in this case. The Langmuir and Sips isothermal models best fit the experimental equilibrium data. The process was shown to be favorable (ΔG°ads<0), endothermic (ΔH°ads>0), with an increase in the degrees of freedom at the solid–liquid interface (ΔS°ads>0), and with characteristics of a physical-chemical adsorption process (Ea = 11.065 kJ mol–1) under the study conditions. Adsorption was favored at the natural pH of the solution and the organophilic clay could be regenerated with water and reused in consecutive adsorption cycles. The amount of ivermectin adsorbed on the organophilic clay ranged from 1.78 to 3.88 mg g–1. The organophilic clay was shown to be a cost-effective potential adsorbent for ivermectin-contaminated water-treatment applications.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for developing disinfectant surfaces as well as reducing the spread of infections on contaminated surfaces and the contamination risk from the fomite route. The present work reports on the antiviral activity of coatings containing ZnO particles obtained by two simple synthesis routes using Aloe vera (ZnO-aloe) or cassava starch (ZnO-starch) as reaction fuel. After detailed characterization using XRD and NEXAFS, the obtained ZnO particles were dispersed in a proportion of 10% with two different waterborne acrylic coatings (binder and commercial white paint) and brushed on the surface of polycarbonates (PC). The cured ZnO/coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopes (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Wettability tests were performed. The virucidal activity of the ZnO particles dispersed in the waterborne acrylic coating was compared to a reference control sample (PC plates). According to RT-PCR results, the ZnO-aloe/coating displays the highest outcome for antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 using the acrylic binder, inactivating >99% of the virus after 24 h of contact relative to reference control.

ABSTRACT

A precise, sensitive eco-friendly, simple, rapid, and derivative spectrofluorimetric method was developed to quantify edoxaban tosylate monohydrate in pure form and pharmaceutical dosage form. Sudden death due to pulmonary embolism as a consequence of coronavirus infection (covid-19) is an emerging problem. As a result, the world health organization introduced new guidelines to treat patients with COVID-19 with oral anticoagulants. Edoxaban tosylate monohydrate is an oral anticoagulant that doesn't require hospitalization after dose adjustment. This spectrofluorimetric method relies on the derivatization by 9-fluorenyl methyl chloroformate at room temperature in borate buffer pH 9.0. After excitation at 265 nm, the product is highly fluorescent at 309 nm. Many experimental factors influencing the reaction's stability and development were thoroughly investigated and optimized. The method validation was evaluated by using ICH guidelines and showed high precision and accuracy with an average percent recovery of 101.46% ± 1.02. The linear range was 5.0-50.0 ng/mL with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999, the LOD was 1.5 ng/mL, and the LOQ was 4.5 ng/mL. The green assessment of the method was achieved utilizing the eco-scale and the Green Analytical Procedure Index. There was no significant difference between the results of the suggested method and those of the reported method according to Statistical analysis.
